Akbar Ahmed and Judea Pearl share $100,000 prize

WASHINGTON: Dr Akbar Ahmed and Judea Pearl, father of the slain American reporter, Daniel Pearl, are going to share a $100,000 prize for their campaign against intolerance and terrorism. Akbar and Pearl are among five recipients of the newly established Purpose Prize, awarded to Americans age 60 or older who are addressing long-standing social problems. Pearl, 70, an authority on artificial intelligence at UCLA, is the father of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was murdered by in Karachi in 2002. In response to the tragedy, Pearl and his wife, Ruth, established a foundation in their son’s name to further cross-cultural understanding. Dr Ahmed, 63, holds the Ibne Khaldun chair of Islamic Studies at American University, Washington.
