What Future Holds for Pakistan?

WATANDOST EDITORIAL
May 13, 2007

Daily Times aptly reflects the national mood in Pakistan when it ran the headline: "Karachi Bleeds, Nation Weeps". Karachi was in turmoil and the rest of Pakistan watched it on private television channels helplessly. Many a hopes and dreams were crushed in this unholy drama. To any neutral observer, it is obvious that MQM is the culprit and General Musharraf was the instigator. Musharraf's personal interests have blinded his vision and he has completely lost his sense of direction. The crisis can linger on for a few months but predictably with every passing day Musharraf's hold on power will decrease. Consequently, Pakistan will become increasingly ungovernable. The civil society movement in support of rule of law and supremacy of constitution spearheaded by Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhury is the only hope in this otherwise bleak scenario. If Musharraf will further try to muzzle this movement through force, he may succeed in the short term but only at the cost of Pakistan's survival. Religious extremists are also expected to show their strength shortly. The next wave of public disenchantment can very well be under green banners. Musharraf's continuation in power also increases the possibility of a military coup to unseat him. Army's institutional interests are too important for generals. They are not expected to silently watch these tragedies unfold and get blame for all that Musharraf is doing in their name. It will be a miracle if the next transfer of power in Pakistan will be smooth and without violence.
