SECOND EDITORIAL: A sectarian Al Qaeda strikes in Peshawar
Daily Times, January 6, 2007
On Thursday, unidentified gunmen shot dead the Shia leader Syed Ali Imam Jafari in the Kotwali police precinct of Peshawar. They opened fire on him when he was going to an imambargah in the city. Mr Jafari was the caretaker of imambargah Ali Imam and a former president of Tehreek-e-Jafaria in his tehsil. Peshawar’s beleaguered Shia community then came out to protest his death and asked the MMA government to provide security to them in the face of sectarian killers.
Pakistan should take heed that Al Qaeda has now come out openly as a sectarian organisation after the Shia-killer Abu Musab al-Zarqawi announced the new Al Qaeda ideology in Iraq before he was killed in June last year. Since then, Al Qaeda has organised all the jihadis of Pakistan under the banner of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and given them the new charter of destroying Pakistan’s civil society. Therefore those who sympathise with Al Qaeda or think it is a heroic outfit fighting US imperialism on behalf of the Muslim world should think again. *
