LAHORE: Eight prominent personalities have written another letter to President General Pervez Musharraf urging him to remove his uniform and form a caretaker government consisting of judges of the Supreme Court three months before the next general elections, Geo television reported on Tuesday.

Speaking to Geo, Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui, former chief justice of Pakistan, said the letter was an effort to ensure that the results of the next general elections do not create a political crisis in the country. Siddiqui said the letter also pointed towards the situation in Wana and Balochistan and asked President Musharraf to resolve the issues by political means. He said the situation in the tribal areas of the NWFP and Balochistan was similar to the circumstances in 1971.

Siddiqui said that elections held under SC judges would restore the people’s trust and hoped that President Musharraf would sincerely consider the suggestions made in the letter and take measures to remove the people’s doubts regarding the next general elections. Besides Justice (r) Siddiqui, the letter has been signed by former SC chief justice Syed Sajjad Ali Shah, former National Assembly speakers Syed Fakhar Imam and Elahi Bux Somro, former acting prime minister Balakh Sher Mazari, former deputy speaker Wazir Ahmad Jogazai, former NWFP governor Mian Gul Aurangzeb and former Balochistan chief minister Taj Muhammad Jamali.
