Troubling data about targetted killings in Karachi

Daily Times, April 10, 2006
‘97 target killings took place over 87 days this year’

KARACHI: Anarchy would engulf Karachi if immediate steps were not taken to stop lawlessness, killings, looting and extortion in the city, said Naib Nazim Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan, Prof. Ghafoor Ahmed.

He was speaking at a press conference held on Sunday to release a White Paper on corruption, plunder, terrorism and other incidents of violence that have taken place in the city during the last 15 months from January 2005 to March 2006.

He claimed that President Pervez Musharraf’s patronage for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had turned Karachi into a hub of lawlessness. Since the entire responsibility of the situation lies with the president, he should resign forthwith.

“When the chief minister of Sindh himself states that he has no authority over the urban areas of province as it rests with the MQM, what could a person expect or demand from the provincial government,” he remarked.

Prof. Ghafoor said it was surprising that the MQM was allowed to take the city hostage. The White Paper says that during the year 2005 a total of 676 people were murdered, besides 37 activists of different political parties and 13 policemen, who had taken part in the Karachi operation. In 87 days of the year 2006 from January 1 to March 28, a total of 97 cases of target killings were reported.

It says that 195 people were seriously injured while 499 were slightly injured in riots. A total of 702 violent incidents happened in the city, while 386 policemen were attacked. A total of 745 persons were abducted and 3,595 incidents of car snatching and 5,232 cases of motorcycle snatching took place during this period.

Prof. Ghafoor accused the MQM of carrying out organized terror activities in the educational institutions of Karachi. He said that roads were dug out in the name of development, which caused prolonged traffic jams. The JI leader also criticized the demolition of old villages. Amir of Jamat-e-Islami Karachi Division Dr Mairaj-ul-Huda, MPA Nasarullah Shajji and others were present on the occasion. ppi
