MNA proposes presidential system of govt
By Irfan Ghauri
ISLAMABAD: Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani, a central leader of the MMA and president of the JUI’s Balochistan chapter, said on Tuesday that the parliamentary system should be replaced with the presidential system.
“To eliminate military intervention in the political system forever, adopt the presidential system where the president should be elected directly. He should also be chief of army staff, abolishing the office of the chief of army staff in the armed forces,” Sherani told the National Assembly. “You agree with the US on all other issues, why not adopt their system of government?” he said. He proposed that technocrats be taken as cabinet members instead of parliamentarians. Sherani said the federal government should retain control over defence, foreign affairs and communication and leave all other issues to the provinces. He said the country was ranked the 18th most corrupt nation in the world during the tenure of Nawaz Sharif. “During the early years of the Musharraf government, it was ranked 27th and now again it has been ranked 11th most corrupt country in the world,” he said.
