Pakistan: Lawyers’ Leader Rearrested
By DAVID ROHDE; New York Times, December 21, 2007
Pakistani officials rearrested Aitzaz Ahsan, the leader of Pakistan’s lawyers movement, just 18 hours after granting him a three-day release from detention as a good-will gesture for the Id al-Adha holiday. He was arrested just outside the capital, Islamabad, according his wife. Mr. Ahsan; the dismissed chief justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry; and several other dismissed justices have been jailed or placed under house arrest since President Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency last month, suspended the Constitution and appointed a new Supreme Court. The lawyers movement is a driving force of the opposition against Mr. Musharraf.
