KARACHI: The police have arrested two outlaws suspected of involvement in the Sept 10 murder of Liaquat Hussein, who was Federal Finance Minister Omar Ayub Khan’s protocol officer. Hussein also held the post of vice president of National Bank of Pakistan. Four other suspects are still at large.

The men are allegedly members of the banned Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and carried head money for their arrests. They had apparently separated from these organisations and formed their own group comprising six members to target prominent Shias and Ahmedis.

DSP Anti-Violent Crime Unit Amir told Daily Times Sunday that the unit found out from an informer that accused Kashif alias Suhail and Muhammad Ahmed alias Umer were passing through Bagh-e-Korangi, Singer Chowrangi within the limits of Korangi Industrial Area police. The accused were in a Suzuki Cultus car with fake number plat No. ACV 967 at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. The car was owned by Liaquat Hussein and had original number plates bearing No. AEZ 162.

The men were signaled to stop and were arrested. The AVCU said it seized five pistols, two silencers and one 9mm pistol from their possession. “The car was used in the murder of Liaquat Hussein but the number plate had been changed. Two cell phones were also taken from them,” the DSP said. “One belonged to a Shia person and the owner of Noble computers, Dara Feroze Mirza, who was also allegedly killed by the accused. The other belonged to the deceased Liaquat Hussein.” According to the police, they had killed Hussein under the presumption that he was Shia. They had picked him up from Rashid Minhas Road as he was returning home in his car. They roamed around with him and then took him to Gulshan-e-Maymar where they tortured and shot him.

The accused had allegedly killed Mirza after kidnapping him on Sept 14 from near his office in Karimabad. Mirza was allegedly hidden in Korangi, beaten and then strangled. His dead body was dropped near Hawkesbay. He was also shot The police said that they were also suspects in the murder of a certain Dr Hamid, an Ahmedi, who was kidnapped from near his clinic at Quaidabad, Landhi on Sept 20. He was also taken to Korangi Industrial area where he was shot.
